TITLE DEFENSE A STEP CLOSER
The Fresno Falcons moved one step
closer to winning their second straight Taylor Cup last week by dispatching
the Idaho Steelheads four games to two in their best-of-seven first round series.
Game Six of the series was played last Tuesday in Boise, after Idaho fought off elimination with a 5-2 victory in Game Five. Strong goaltending from Mark Gowan, especially in the early stages of the first period, and a short-handed goal from Scott Borders mid-way through the opening period that served as the eventual game-winner helped stake Fresno to an insurmountable 3-1 lead. The Falcons ended up winning, 6-2, as they knocked off the favored Steelheads in the playoffs for the second year in a row.
GULLS GRAB EARLY
FINALS LEAD
It did not take long for the defending Cup champions to realize they were in
for a fight during the Finals after the San Diego Gulls bolted out to a 1-0
lead just 1:02 into Game One of the Championship series this past Friday. San
Diego cruised to a 7-2 win, with the five-goal margin of defeat tying the record
for the worst playoff loss in Falcons history.
The series continues tonight with Game Two at the San Diego Sports Arena. All of the live play-by-play action can be heard on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat, beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Mail Boxes, Etc. Pre-game Show.
Tickets are on sale now for Games Three and Four at Selland Arena on Wednesday, Apr. 30, and Friday, May 2, at the Selland box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com. Arena/Loge seats cost $16 and Balcony seats cost $12.
