FALCONS BREAK OUT OF SCORING SLUMP
Borders' Hat Trick Leads the Way in 6-2 Victory
FRESNO, Calif. - Behind three goals from Scott Borders, the
Fresno Falcons
snapped an eight-game winless streak by defeating the San Diego Gulls on
Saturday, 6-2, in front of 7,313 at Selland Arena.
San Diego opened the scoring in a wide-open first period that
featured 30
shots on goal between the two clubs. David Neale snuck a rebound by Fresno
netminder Terry Friesen at 11:17 to give the Gulls their only lead of the
night. Borders responded with his first tally of the evening at 17:04 with
Fresno skating on a five-on-three power play.
Borders gave the Falcons a 2-1 advantage at 7:38 of the second
with another
power play goal before David Haas notched Fresno's third power play marker
of the game with just 14 seconds remaining in the second period to give his
club a 3-1 lead heading to the third.
The Gulls' Dean Tiltgen brought San Diego back within one with
his 25th goal
of the year on the power play at 4:41 of the third. The Falcons then broke
the game open with three unanswered tallies in a span of 4:23. Borders
recorded his 19th goal and second hat trick of the season at 10:16 by
beating San Diego goaltender Trevor Koenig with a slapshot for the third
time. Rob Bonneau tallied his second goal in as many games with Fresno at
12:38, and the scoring was completed with Jordan Landry's seventh of the
campaign at 14:39.
The win was Fresno's first since March 2, and halted a scoring
drought
during which the Falcons scored just 12 goals in their last eight games
prior to tonight. Fresno is 31-27-8 with 70 points and is assured of a
Taylor Cup Finals re-match with the Idaho Steelheads in the first round of
this year's post-season after Idaho clinched first place in the league this
evening.
The Falcons return to the ice next Friday and Saturday, March
28 and 29,
when they visit the Long Beach Ice Dogs and Bakersfield Condors,
respectively. Friday's game can be heard live on 103.1 FM, The Mountain
Cat, beginning at 7:20 p.m. with the Mail Boxes, Etc. Pre-game Show with
Saturday's broadcast kicking off at 6:50 p.m.
